Edgemont Wrestling Club BBQ Honors Alumni

The crowd enjoying the food and friends at the Annual Edgemont
Wrestling Club Barbecue at the Candlelight Inn.

Edgemont institution, the Candlelight Inn on Central Avenue, played host to the first annual Edgemont Wrestling Club Barbecue this past Saturday. Over 60 people were in attendance to feast and catch up with old friends.

The weather was looking questionable most of the day, but the clouds broke and the sun was shining bright in the sky by the time the 3 PM start time rolled around.

Guests feasted on cheeseburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, potato salad and Candlelight Wings!

Generations of Edgemont Wrestling alumni and their families were all present making for an awesome afternoon. We had alumni from the class of 1970, Ben Barkhouse, all the way down to current wrestlers on our youth team!

The Barbecue also served as the inaugural induction ceremony to the new Edgemont Wrestling Club Hall of Fame. Anthony DeMaio ’92 and Eric Kantor were inducted as crowd of friends, family and supporters looked on.

DeMaio was a 1992 Edgemont graduate and team captain, a three-time Section 1 Finalist and a 1992 Section Champion at 112 pounds. He placed 4th in the NYS Championships and was Edgemont’s first-ever All-State honoree. He finished his high school career with 130 wins, an Edgemont Wrestling record that stood for 18 years.

Kantor was Edgemont’s first ever wrestling coach, introducing the sport to Edgemont in the 1963-1964 Season. He lead the team its first four seasons. Kantor, now retired, was also a long-time math teacher at Edgemont High School and a tremendous supporter of all Edgemont athletics. Over the years, Kantor has been a fixture at Edgemont wrestling matches and has been “The Voice” of the Edgemont Invitational Wrestling Tournament for 30 years.
