SCARSDALE, N.Y. ? Before Danny Kornberg stepped on the mat for the 220?pound final of the 30th annual Edgemont Wrestling Tournament, he remembered a promise he made to his little sister, Stephanie.
The Edgemont senior promised Stephanie, who turned 8 on Saturday, that he would win the tournament for her. Kornberg, not wanting to disappoint his sister, went out and gave her a memorable birthday present.
Kornberg decisioned Collegiate?s Kevin Brumback 4?2 in overtime to win the title on Sunday.
He was one of four Panther champions as Edgemont won the team title for the first time in tournament history, amassing 228 points. Scarsdale finished second (179.5 points) and Horace Mann, coached by Ardsley graduate Gregg Cuilty, was third (178.5 points).
Tyler (99 pounds) and Trey Aslanian (113) and Sky Korek (106) won their respective weight classes. Trey Aslanian shared most outstanding wrestler honors with Scarsdale?s Jacob Berkowitz.
Following his title, Kornberg was greeted by Stephanie with a big hug.
?Stephanie wanted me to win it and I promised her I would,? Kornberg said with a big smile. ?I know she was very happy. I heard her screaming, ?You won! You won!? It was very special.?
Kornberg and Brumback were even at 2?2 after regulation. Kornberg executed a takedown with 15 seconds remaining in the one?minute overtime period.
?I was working on trying to get underhooks to a throw-by single, but instead, he took a shot,? Kornberg said. ?I was able to get him out of position on the shot and go behind him for the takedown and win.?
Tyler Aslanian pinned James Kelly of Pearl River in the final and Trey Aslanian did the same to John Muldoon, also of Pearl River, in their final. Trey Aslanian, who decisioned Muldoon in the Ted Murphy Shoreline Classic 113?final, pinned him in 34 seconds.
Korek won by major decision, 11?3, in his title bout.
