Panthers Off to a Solid Start

Danny Kornberg

Two weeks into the 2010-2011 competitive season, the Edgemont Panthers are off to a strong start. Despite the team?s youth ? Edgemont has no Seniors on its roster and only 5 Juniors ? it has made an impact in Section 1 already.
The team is led in wins by its three captains. Junior Danny Kornberg is 10-4 at 215 lbs.;j Junior Max Abramsky is 13-2 at 112 lbs.; and Sophomore Trey Aslanian is a perfect 15-0 on the season with Tournament titles at both the Tony Carlucci Duals at SUNY Purchase and, more recently, the Jerry McGuire Tournament at North Rockland High School. Abramsky also has a Carlucci tournament title under his belt and Aslanian was named Most Outstanding Sophomore at the same event.
The Panthers left their mark on the Carlucci Tournament where they finished 5th as a team, winning dual meets over Hendrick Hudson, Croton and Eastchester and wrestling to tightly contested losses versus Mamaroneck and Iona Prep – all this while forfeiting five weight classes, giving up 30 points in each match. Edgemont left home several athletes due to illness and injury.
Of note were the large number of 3rd period and overtime wins notched by Edgemont, all by underclassmen.? ?I can?t remember ever seeing so many late-match victories by our athletes in a single tournament. It?s a testament to the heart and drive of this team and speaks to the work they?re putting in on a daily basis in the practice room,? said First Assistant Coach Pete Jacobson. Included here were a thrilling 3rd period wins by Junior Pete Berman (135 lbs.) and a buzzer-beating takedown win by Sophomore Sky Korek (96 lbs). Kornberg and Sophomore Jason Worobow (160 lbs) also had thrilling overtime victories for Edgemont.
The Panther success continued the following weekend at the Jerry McGuire Tournament where five athletes placed in the top four of their respective weight classes. In addition to Aslanian?s title, Kornberg and Korek placed 3rd, and Sophomores Jack McCormack (140 lbs) and Worobow took 4th.
